To mark Global Recycle Day, Groundwork North Wales is highlighting the practical, community-led initiatives helping people across North Wales reduce waste, extend the life of everyday items, and embrace more sustainable habits.
Through a range of local projects focussed on repair, reuse and resource sharing, the organisation is helping communities play an active role in reducing unnecessary waste while making sustainable choices more affordable and accessible.
One of these initiatives can be found at Refurbs Buckley, where monthly repair sessions give the community the opportunity to bring in broken household items, small electricals and other everyday items to be checked over and repaired by a dedicated team of volunteers, helping prevent usable items from ending up in landfill. These sessions not only extend product life but also encourage people to rethink throwing away and instead value repair as an important part of a circular economy.
Reuse is promoted at Lend and Mend, a borrowing scheme that enables the Wrexham community to access useful tools and equipment without the need to buy new. By borrowing instead of purchasing, people can save money, reduce consumption and make better use of shared resources in their community.
Meanwhile, Refurbs Flint continues to champion recycling and reuse through the sale of quality second-hand furniture. By giving preloved furniture a second life, they are diverting bulky waste from disposal while providing affordable home essentials for local households.
Together, these initiatives demonstrate how recycling goes beyond simply sorting waste. It also includes repairing, reusing, borrowing ad making thoughtful choices about the items we use every day.
“Don’t think waste. Think opportunity.” – Global Recycling Day.
Groundwork North Wales encourages local residents to explore these services and consider how small every day actions can make a meaningful environmental difference.
